Measuring Loading and Unloading Efficiency Across Inbound and Outbound

Ask a yard how long it takes to unload an inbound trailer versus load an outbound one, broken down by type, and you will usually get a shrug and an estimate. That shrug is the problem. Loading and unloading is where the clock really runs — it is the longest, most variable part of a trailer's time on site — and it is almost always the least measured. You cannot manage what you do not time.

Why one average hides the cost

Most sites that do measure dock time track a single blended average across everything. That average hides exactly the information you need. A live-load outbound, a drop-trailer inbound, a reefer and an intermodal box are completely different jobs with different durations and different costs. Blend them together and you cannot see which type is dragging, which carrier is slow, or which dock underperforms.

What YARDtwin times — automatically

Because every step is captured as a timestamped event by the people doing the work, YARDtwin measures the dock cycle without anyone filling in a sheet:

  • Dock-on to dock-off — the actual time a trailer spends being worked, per visit.
  • Split by inbound and outbound — unloading and loading measured separately, because they are separate jobs.
  • Broken down by load type — live load, drop, reefer and more, so you compare like with like.
  • By dock, carrier and time of day — find the slow door, the slow carrier and the slow shift.
  • Transit and queue time around the dock — the move and the wait either side of the work, so you see the full cost, not just the active minutes.
The moment loading and unloading become measured numbers instead of estimates, two things happen: you can see where the cost actually sits, and you can hold the right party to account — a slow carrier, a constrained door, a staffing gap — with evidence rather than opinion.

From visibility to cost management

Visibility is the means; lower cost is the end. Once you can see dock efficiency by type, you can act on it — rebalance work across doors, set realistic appointment durations per load type, target the carriers and shifts that lag, and feed those real durations back into Smart Slots scheduling and crew planning so the plan matches reality. It also sharpens your dwell-time and detention position, because you can show exactly where the time went.

Measurable from week one

Like the rest of YARDtwin, this needs no hardware and no manual logging — switch it on and the dock starts producing data immediately. The first week gives you a baseline for each load type; the weeks after show whether your changes are working.

See loading and unloading efficiency by inbound, outbound and load type — and turn dock time into managed cost. Try YARDtwin free for 30 days, no hardware.
